Creating an Inspiring Home Office

19 Mar 2020

With crisis comes opportunity.

Many Australians are currently being asked to work from home. However, that needn’t mean propping yourself at the end of the dining room table or making space on the kitchen bench. Take the opportunity to create a dedicated work space in your home that inspires and motivates you.

Be Innovative

You don’t necessarily need a dedicated room for your home office. With a little creativity, you can create a functional and attractive workspace within an existing room. All you need is a Wi-Fi connection, a laptop and space for a desk and chair.

Perhaps search for a rustic dining table in your local classifieds and pop it under the window in your spare bedroom, under the stairs or allocate space in the corner of your living room.  Decorate with stationery and accessories that complement the room’s décor.

Add soothing items

Personalise the space. Invest in a scented candle for the benefits of aromatherapy. Surround yourself with plants which will filter the air and bring tranquility. Add a small speaker and play some background tunes. Spotify and other music providers have a wide range of ‘office’ playlists in all styles and moods…Best of all, the music selection is 100% yours when you’re working alone!

Let there be light

If possible, position your workspace somewhere that lets in plenty of natural light. This will elevate your mood and general comfort. Weather depending, open a nearby window or external door to allow for fresh air to circulate.

More permanent solutions

While the Coronavirus pandemic will force many to work from home in the short to medium term, there are now widespread reports that remote working may become ‘the new norm’ and continue post-crisis and thereafter. Should you be looking for a more permanent solution, you could consider installing fixed cabinetry including integrated workspaces with built-in desks and shelving, or perhaps a dedicated home office addition with full office fit-out. You may even choose to add an independent home studio or ancillary accommodation, similar to a granny flat, that allows you to essentially ‘go out’ to work, without leaving home.

Over the past 30+ years Addstyle Master Builders has built many home studios and house extensions that incorporate home offices. The space can be constructed within weeks and designed to complement and blend seamlessly with the main home.
