This substantial renovation and addition project in Subiaco focused on transforming a cherished character home into a highly functional, multi-generational residence while preserving its classic features and charm. The scope was extensive, incorporating both ground and first-floor works that respected the original structure while introducing modern liveability.
On the ground floor, the home was extended to include a new open-plan kitchen with scullery, dining and living spaces, a new laundry with walk-in linen, a powder room, and a generous alfresco with outdoor kitchen. A new single carport was also constructed, with detailing designed to complement the home’s façade. The former Bedroom Two was converted into a walk-in robe and ensuite, integrating seamlessly with the existing layout.
The first-floor addition created a second storey with a family bathroom, separate WC, activity room, additional bedrooms, and linen storage. A custom staircase, crafted in jarrah and pine, connects the levels, with materials and profiles chosen to match the original character.
The renovation involved significant structural and preparatory works, including the removal of asbestos, underpinning, and engineered footings. Face brickwork from the original demolition was retained and reused to ensure continuity in materiality. External materials such as terracotta Marseille roof tiles, Dutch gables, and timber joinery were used throughout to maintain architectural consistency with the existing home.
Interior finishes reflect a timeless palette, with shaker-profile cabinetry, Caesarstone benchtops, and quality fixtures throughout. The alfresco area was finished with V-joint pine lining and incorporates structural timber elements to mirror the home’s existing character.
This project demonstrates a high level of detail and planning, with carefully staged works that allowed for vacant possession during each phase. The result is a cohesive, elegant home that supports the needs of a growing family without compromising its historical charm.
