This project involved the comprehensive renovation of a 1930s character home in Nedlands, including an extensive ground floor remodel and the construction of a full brick second storey addition. Unlike many second storey additions that utilise lightweight construction, the new upper level was built in brick veneer to replicate the proportions, detailing and permanence of the original home, allowing the addition to integrate seamlessly with the existing residence.
The new staircase occupies what was previously an underutilised ante-space at the centre of the home. Constructed with solid Jarrah treads, it rises through a dramatic double-height void beneath a feature chandelier to connect the original home with the new upper level.
The second storey is arranged into two distinct zones. A private parents’ wing is entered through double doors into its own foyer and comprises a generous main bedroom, an expansive ensuite with double shower and dedicated make-up station, and separate fully fitted his and hers dressing rooms. Separate from the parents’ suite, the remainder of the upper level accommodates a sitting room with custom wet bar and a large study or 6th bedroom.
Constructed on a Hebel aerated concrete floor system, the addition combines the acoustic and structural benefits of a solid floor with the permanence of brick construction. Jarrah timber flooring, bespoke timber joinery, decorative cornices, tall skirtings and custom leadlight windows replicate the detailing of the original residence, ensuring the addition sits comfortably alongside the existing home.
The ground floor was extensively refreshed to create a contemporary family living environment centred around a bespoke kitchen featuring shaker-profile cabinetry, an oversized island and Calacatta Caesarstone benchtops and splashbacks. A feature stone-clad gas fireplace with a suspended Jarrah plinth anchors the adjoining living area, while the main bathroom was completely renovated with custom cabinetry and large-format porcelain tiling.
Externally, the alfresco was transformed with custom outdoor cabinetry, terrazzo-style tiling, lined ceiling, and an expansive timber deck overlooking a new concrete swimming pool and landscaped gardens.
The project was completed with a front boundary wall, gatehouse with tiered limestone piers, and custom electric gates and fencing, creating a cohesive streetscape that complements the architecture of the original home.
This home was recognised at both the 2024 Housing Industry Association Perth Housing Awards and the Master Builders Association Housing Excellence Awards.
