Mount Hawthorn Modern Second Storey

This project in Mount Hawthorn involved a substantial renovation and extension to a classic character home, designed to support a growing family and modernise the living experience while remaining sympathetic to the home’s original charm.

The scope included a complete reconfiguration of the rear ground floor to create a new family hub—comprising kitchen, meals, family room, laundry, and alfresco—alongside the conversion of the original kitchen into a study. A first-floor addition was also introduced, offering a new main suite, walk-in robe, ensuite, home office, and stair void, delivering both functionality and separation of space.

The design balances contemporary elements with timeless finishes. A refined material palette is used throughout, including Dekton Laguna Velvet benchtops, Caesarstone surfaces, and cabinetry with recessed finger pulls. The kitchen, ensuite, and utility areas have been tailored with carefully considered cabinetry detailing, while the ensuite features a freestanding bath, custom vanity, and generous tiled finishes. Energy efficiency was prioritised with upgraded insulation, thermally improved glazing, and compliance-driven external cladding.

Construction required the removal of outdated outbuildings and patios, significant internal demolition, and the careful underpinning of a boundary fence using chemical grout injection. Challenges included restricted site access and integration with the existing structure—especially around the stair void and floor transitions—which were addressed through detailed planning and skilled execution.

Externally, the use of Maxline and Scyon cladding, acrylic render in a soft neutral tone, and new aluminium joinery in charcoal provide a contemporary yet complementary addition to the original home.

This project is a strong example of how thoughtful design and quality construction can bring renewed life, function, and value to a well-loved character property—delivering long-term livability with enduring appeal.
